Concert Review - Aled Wyn Davies
Aled Wyn Davies: Wales' favourite
tenor! Those of us who had been fortunate to hear this prize winning singer, eagerly anticipated his recital in
Toronto on October 6. And we were definitely not disappointed. In fact we were totally won over by Aled's exquisite
voice - and his delightful personality. With such a voice one would naturally assume that Aled is a professional
musician. He has won the tenor solo three years in succession at the National Eisteddfod, and in 2006 won the coveted
Blue Ribband - the ultimate accolade in Wales. He was also "Singer for the Year" at the Llangollen International
Eisteddfod in 2005. Despite his reputation as one of the best tenors in Wales, Aled earns his living as a sheep
farmer in Llanbrynmair, Powys.
His visit to Ontario was arranged
by Alan Thomas of Ottawa. Alan is well known to the Welsh community of North America as the organist and accompanist
of choice for the North American Festival of Wales and the Ontario Welsh Festival. When Alan heard Aled sing at
the Chicago NAFoW in 2008 he invited him to come to Ottawa and Toronto. The visit was arranged for October this
year (sheep farmers can't travel far from home during the lambing season!) Aled's choice of solos took us around
the world- but constantly returning to his beloved Wales. His repertoire ranged from the familiar Arafa Don to
Rogers and Hammerstein, religious works and operatic arias. La Donna e Mobile by Verdi is well known to everyone,
but it was the first time for me to hear the exquisite Musica Proibita by Gastaldon.
What a splendid musical evening!
I have rarely hear the Welsh National Anthem sung with such fervour. We were reluctant to end the event and, thanks
to the St. David's Society, we were able to extend the evening at a reception in the Fellowship Hall.
Hefina Phillips.
